Player brothers team up to build wilderness golf estate

The development of what could be a multi-billion golf and wilderness estate on
5 000 ha of land in the Waterberg in the Limpopo province, was under way.
The Waterberg Estate would include an 18-hole signature golf course designed by Gary Player and incorporate a wildlife and wilderness strategy to be devised by his conservationist brother, Dr Ian Player.
Development consortium director Tony Georgiou said that the project has taken time to put together, but that the collaboration of the Player brothers should bring a new dimension to region and to the development.
To date, Gary Player has designed about 300 golf courses worldwide, but he and Georgiou viewed the project as an opportunity redefine the environmental standards for property development in the region.
Ian Player said he hoped he and Gary would be able to develop an estate and golf couse that required minimum levels of water, adding that he had already started experimenting with the concept in the water-stressed region of the Karoo.
