Celebrating 25 years of making a change
Published in The Star 2008

“Change agents… Innovators…. Landscape shapers… Lifestyle enhancers…”
All apt words for describing the ways in which the Power Group has made a difference to the lives of people in Africa for 25 years.

And now Power is again making a change, perhaps an even more fundamental one.

While stakeholders (employees, suppliers, financial institutions, professionals as well as valued clients) gathered last week to celebrate the Power Group’s 25th year in business (and its fourth in Gauteng), executive chairman Graham Power recommitted himself to his initiative aimed at changing the way we conduct business – and indeed our lives – in South Africa.

A quarter of a century ago, Graham and Lauren set out in an orange second-hand bakkie on a journey that would do much to alter the face of construction and engineering in South Africa.

That day in April 1983 marked the beginning of a career and the birth of a company that would have as its core purpose “to improve the quality of life in Africa through infrastructure development”.

In striving to achieve its vision, which is “to be recognised and respected as the first choice supplier of civil, development and building services”, the Power Group is encouraged and guided by another dream, a constant reminder that the company is in it for the long run.

The “100-year dream” is a commitment, a promise that Power’s leadership made in 2001 to the prolonged existence of the Group. It is an undertaking that the Group and its culture and ethics will continue to thrive long after the lives of those who currently constitute Power Construction and Power Developments.

This is neither a pipedream, nor wishful thinking. This pledge to perpetuate everything that Power stands for is an actual long-term business objective, with definite processes and courses of action put in place to ensure its fulfilment long after passing the 25-year milestone that the company is celebrating this year.
