Cape road construction begins

Construction work on the Koeberg Interchange near Cape Town in preparation for the 2010 World Cup will start on Thursday evening, the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works said.
The head of the department, Thami Manyathi, said construction work would be done on weekends and every evening after the rush hour, ending before the morning rush.
One of the major feats of the project would be to re-align the canal that formed part of the Black River, running near the interchange.
The canal would be shifted several metres to make room for expanding the road.
The project was expected to take two years and was meant to ease traffic congestion "into 2010 and beyond", department spokesperson Al-Ameen Kafaar said. He said construction would have little effect on traffic.
